About the Event

I Wake Up Screaming (1941)

Director: H. Bruce Humberstone

Starring: Betty Grable, Victor Mature, Carole Landis, Laird Cregar, Elisha Cook, Jr.

USA / 82mins / PG

Based on a novel of the same name by the renowned pulp writer Steve Fisher (Dead Reckoning), I Wake Up Screaming (1941) tells the story of Nork York sports promoter Frankie Christopher (Victor Mature) who is on the wrong side of the law due to the murder of a fashion model he made famous.

Everything and everyone one is against him, from the corrupt detective (Laird Cregar) trying to put the finger on him to the entire city of New York. Co-starring the great Carole Landis (Four Jills in a Jeep), a terrifying performance by Laird Cregar (The Lodger), classic noir regular Elisha Cook Jr. (The Maltese Falcon, Phantom Lady) and the then musical legend Betty Grable (How to Marry a Millionaire, Down Argentine Way).

Filled with the many hallmarks of classic film noir as well as plenty of twists and turns, I Wake Up Screaming will keep you guessing until the very end.

Presented in collaboration with BFI Film Audience Network and Film Noir UK (https://www.southwestsilents.com/filmnoiruk)
