About the Event

A thrill ride throughout, Sherlock Holmes (1922) is one of the landmark titles in the ever-popular adventures of the super sleuth.

Starring the great John Barrymore as Arthur Conan Doyle’s celebrated Sherlock Holmes, this adaptation from the hugely popular stage version by William Gillette not only provided Barrymore with one of his most prestigious early roles, but also presented the screen debuts of two notable actors: William Powell (The Thin Man) and Roland Young (Topper).

When a young prince (Reginald Denny) is accused of a crime that could embroil him in international scandal, Holmes comes to his aid and quickly discovers that behind the incident lurks a criminal mastermind, the infamous Professor Moriarty (Gustav von Seyffertitz), who is eager to reduce Western civilisation to anarchy.

With thanks to the George Eastman House. Live musical accompaniment by Stephen Horne.

Sherlock Holmes is part of Bristol Ideas’ 2022 series Modernism1922 which explores the worlds of film, literature, music, politics and more 100 years ago. It is run as a tribute to Kevin Jackson. His book, Constellation of Genius: 1922: Modernism and All That Jazz, tells the story of that remarkable year.
