About the Event
An extravagant film noir set in Mexico City’s red-light district nightclubs, starring the sensationally versatile diva Ninón Sevilla, known as ‘The Golden Venus’.
Sevilla, a huge international superstar by the 1950s, plays Violeta, a cabaret dancer at the Club Changoo who saves a new-born baby boy thrown by a co-worker into a bin (located in front of the city’s Monument to the Revolution). Against the odds, even turning to prostitution, Violeta raises the child as her own, all the while defending him from his father, the ruthless gangster-pimp Rodolfo (Rodolfo Acosta).
Víctimas del Pecado (Victims of Sin) is one of the most emblematic films directed by Emilio “El Indio” Fernández with cinematography by acclaimed Gabriel Figueroa, and music of mambo king Damaso Pérez Prado.
The 4K restoration is provided by Cineteca Nacional de Mexico.
Presented by Film Noir UK and Lorena Pino as part of Other Ways of Seeing, supported by BFI awarding funds from National Lottery. With an introduction by Lorena Pino, film curator and promoter of Latin American film culture.
